The strong competition of Greek and Macedonian watermelons in our markets is about to erase the iconic watermelons from Lyubimets. The reason is that local farmers cannot compete with low prices of imported fruits.

This year too, the farmers from Southern Bulgaria report a weak year, and the strong import of watermelons from our neighboring countries dooms them to bankruptcy, Nova TV reports.

Only a few years ago, there were thousands of acres of planted melons around Lyubimets, but now they have decreased several times, and more and more often producers are giving up the occupied areas.

The producers in our country say that their only hope is in the state institutions, which should find a mechanism through which to protect the Bulgarian watermelon on the market and save their livelihood.

Georgi Lyubenov, who has been growing watermelons for almost half a century, told Nova TV that his income is getting smaller every year, but he hopes for a change.

Dozens of other producers on the Lyubimets stock exchange explain that they earn enough to cover their expenses.

Slavi Zhelyazkov says that last year and last year watermelons were between 25 and 30 stotinki per kilogram wholesale, but still not sold, as imported watermelons were offered for only 8 stotinki per kilogram.

Bulgarian farmers cannot afford such low values, because that would mean working at a loss. And now a large part of their production remains unsold and goes for animal feed.
