The Burgas-based company Neg Group OOD, which sold 14,300 bottles of fake vinegar to the market, will be fined a substantial sum, according to the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.
Neg Group Ltd. is owned by the Burgas businessman Geno Nedyalkov. The inspection revealed that the company had bottled the synthetic acetic acid E260 and sold its product as Amber Vinegar without any indication that it was not in fact vinegar.
Neg Group Ltd. was one of the companies for which the BFSA found that they push synthetic acid to customers instead of vinegar at the height of the season, when Bulgarians traditionally put pickles.
Bottled Amber Vinegar has already sold 14,300 bottles, after which the control authorities have ordered the company to withdraw the goods from the market.
It is not yet known exactly how much the Burgas businessman will be fined, as the amount of the sanction must be determined by the executive director of the BFSA, Professor Plamen Mollov.
But because of the violations found and the fact that so much of the counterfeit vinegar has reached consumers, inspectors say the fine will not be small.
The other companies that offered fake vinegar on the market are ECO LIFE 09 from Yambol, DI GROUP from Varna, RA-Pidakev from Malo Konare, Maryland-2013 OOD from Perushtitsa, Miracle Krasi Maker from Pazardzhik and Apple vinegar Kondrion, produced in the village. Dolno Spanchevo.
The company Maryland-2013 Ltd. has found misleading information on the label of vinegar. In the other bottles, instead of vinegar, the presence of synthetic acid E260 was detected.
This acid, in addition to spoiling the winter for a record short time, consumed in larger quantities, can cause burns to the esophagus and mucous membranes.
Currently, mass inspections for fake vinegar on the market are underway in Plovdiv. The director of the Regional Directorate, Dr. Nikolay Petkov, believes that the lack of a sufficient amount of grapes this year has led to the replacement of natural raw materials, but it is correct for producers to inform about this on the labels.
