The European draft regulation is likely to ban the production of certain varieties of Bulgarian vegetables, including peppers and pink tomatoes.

If the law is passed, vegetable growers will be banned from trading in seeds of non-certified local tomato varieties.

For small Bulgarian producers, the new regulation will mean that they will have to stop producing some of the Bulgarian varieties of peppers and pink tomatoes. The new regulation is still under discussion.

The Bulgarian side is ready to actively insist before the parliament in Brussels not to ban Bulgarian varieties of tomatoes such as the pink "buffalo heart".

"When this regulation is adopted, some varieties of fruits and vegetables may become obsolete and valuable genetic material may be lost," said Associate Professor Tencho Cholakov, director of the Institute of Plant and Genetic Resources in Sadovo.

Protests are expected, if emblematic Bulgarian varieties of tomatoes be prohibited.

"This is our story, there is no way anyone can forbid it," commented vegetable producer Danail Stefanov.

According to the new European regulation, vegetable growers will not have the right to trade and exchange seeds and seedlings of non-certified local varieties. Currently, the price of hybrid foreign seeds is unaffordable for small Bulgarian producers. Therefore, they select their own seedlings and the ban on exchanging them will put them in a difficult situation.

"One seed on the market costs about 25 stotinki" - say from the native vegetable production, saying that it is better to just produce the seeds than to buy them at these high prices.

The native vegetable producers prefer the typical Bulgarian varieties because they have better taste qualities and the consumers are ready to pay a better price for them.

The Institute of Plant and Genetic Resources called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Food to intervene in the situation and protect Bulgarian interests by not allowing production of pink tomatoes to be banned.
