Experts have warned that the popular dietary supplement monosodium glutamate, also known as E 621, leads to food addiction and overeating.
Monosodium glutamate is allowed in our country, but the benefits and harms of this supplement are widely debated around the world. Although it has no taste or smell, E 621 makes food more attractive and stimulates the appetite.
According to some scientists, this supplement causes headaches, palpitations, damages brain cells and creates conditions for the development of Alzheimer's.
In the Bulgarian markets with the highest content of monosodium glutamate are sausages, some types of chilled steaks, canned foods and lutenitsa.
Experts reveal that monosodium glutamate gives a slightly saltier taste to finished products, preserves their color and extends their shelf life.
Associate Professor Paraskova from the Institute for Research and Development of Food in Plovdiv even shared that some manufacturers allow themselves to use unacceptably high amounts of E 621, which can be harmful and dangerous to the health of the consumer.
Currently, Bulgarian specialists are working on an international project, where the ban on the use of monosodium glutamate in foods for children and students under 14 years of age is considered absolutely necessary.
Food experts insist that the permissible daily dose of monosodium glutamate for consumption be reported on product labels.
Studies on the safety of this additive are currently being conducted by experts from the European Food Safety Authority, but the final results will be announced in 2016.
Russia, meanwhile, is preparing to ban the food supplement. A group of deputies from the State Duma is already preparing a bill that will veto the so-called flavor enhancer.
The initiators of the ban are MPs from the Liberal Democratic Party, who have asked for an opinion on the issue from the Ministry of Health and the Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
