Say goodbye to pickles this winter. They sell us fake or unfit vinegar en masse. This was shown by the inspections of the inspectors from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA). In October, the BFSA carried out 2104 inspections in workshops and warehouses of manufacturers.
All regional units of the agency carried out unscheduled inspections of vinegar producers, after the media reported shocking data that they sell us dilute acetic acid and dyes instead of natural products.
As a result of the destruction inspections, 119,816 liters of vinegar were sent, in which unauthorized additives were found. Some of the unfit vinegar was produced in illegal and unregistered workshops.
Another 16,156 liters of vinegar were withdrawn from the market. They were returned to their manufacturers for re-labeling because their labels contained false or misleading information.
Returned labels batch of vinegar containing dilute synthetic acetic acid E 260, but were labeled as natural "wine" and "apple" vinegar.
The data presented by the BFSA show that the largest producer of low-quality vinegar is the Pleven company Veda AD. The people of Pleven have produced more than 10 tons of vinegar, in the composition of which unauthorized additives have been found. Nearly half of the production of Veda AD was produced and offered in stores under other trade names - Arte, Lubex and Krina.
The record-breaker with 99,118 liters, i.e. almost 100 tons of fake vinegar, is another Pleven company - PVD Ltd. The products were bottled and arranged on pallets, ready to go to the trade network when the BFSA inspectors entered the inspection.
The fake vinegar of PVD Ltd. was marked as "apple", "wine" and apple "Fiore". Analyzes of its content revealed that the vinegar in question was in fact bottled synthetic acetic acid E 260. What is worrying in this case are the additives not allowed by European and Bulgarian legislation, which can be potentially dangerous to human health.
Among the other violators, the name of the company "Vinprom Dupnitsa" stands out, from the warehouses of which 1387 liters of synthetic vinegar were seized, in which unauthorized additives were found.
The additional inspection found another 3.3 tons of vinegar, ready for shipment to retail outlets in the country. The complete audit of the Dupnitsa winery has identified drastic violations of the production process and hygiene standards.
It is an interesting fact that all three major violators Veda AD, PVD and Vinprom Dupnitsa have been caught in the past producing and selling fake vinegar. The three companies are on the HEI's "black list" after being sanctioned in 2001 for the sale of dilute synthetic acetic acid E260 for natural vinegar.
In the course of the massive inspections of the BFSA, two illegal workshops were found in Varna, from which about 6 tons of vinegar were seized. These violators were handed over directly to the prosecutor's office and pre-trial proceedings were instituted against them.
