Native experts categorically state that egg paints around Easter are completely safe despite the E102 and E122 dyes they contain.
For some users, the use of E102 is a concern because this dye is said to cause allergic reactions and thyroid tumors.
According to the European Food Safety Authority, E102 or also called tatrazine can cause allergic side effects, which is why its use by children is prohibited.
In the production workshops, however, the experts check only the documentation and what is written in the composition of the package.
Everything is on documents! We can't test whether E122 is safe! Because it is safe once it is on the permit list!”- says engineer Atanas Drobenov from the Food Safety Agency.
The prices of the paints are between 30 stotinki and 3 levs, and the cheapest ones contain less E's. Checks show that a paint of BGN 2.60 contains nine E's, a paint of BGN 1.50 contains seven E's, and a paint of 50 stotinki contains only four E's.
E122, also called carmoisin or azorubin, can also cause allergic reactions, which is why it is banned in many countries.
The Food Safety Agency states that all the ingredients contained in the egg paints on offer are completely safe, and the colors included in them are on the list of permitted items. Therefore, according to experts, Bulgarian consumers have no reason to worry when buying egg paints.
Experts advise to buy paints with the content and the manufacturer written on them.
Despite the ongoing inspections around the Easter holidays, so far there is no exact data on the number of inspected sites and seized goods from stores.
And this year, according to traders, the most preferred paints for eggs are in capsules, because their price is the most affordable and they have the most colors.
