The British Food Standards Agency recently issued a guide explaining when it is safe to eat frozen food. The reason for this was that misconceptions about when food taken out of the refrigerator could be consumed lead to millions of tons of food waste.
Recent research shows that 43 percent of people believe that food can only be frozen on the day of purchase, 38 percent say it is dangerous to re-freeze meat after it has been processed, and 36 percent think that food can become dangerous while in the freezer.
All these notions are wrong. In addition, 31% of people who read the guide then said they had significantly reduced the food they were throwing away.
In the UK, seven million tonnes of food are thrown away each year and more than half of that amount could be consumed, according to the data. The Food Standards Agency has called on the British public to make the most of their freezers to minimize food waste.
Experts say that it is not necessary to freeze food on the day of purchase. Every day until its expiration date is appropriate.
The freezer is like a pause button that delays the spoilage of products, says the author of the guide, Dr. David Wayne. Once thawed, the pause button is turned off and the gradual spoilage of the food begins again. It is good for thawed products to be consumed within 24 hours, he added.
In theory, food can be stored in the freezer indefinitely, although its quality begins to decline after the first three to six months - so it is best to eat it sooner rather than later.
Studies have shown that even deep freezing does not kill bacteria, but makes them inactive. This means that the products stored in the refrigerator compartment are safe. However, once thawed, the bacteria become active and begin to grow again.
Experts recommend that foods be thawed gradually. Higher temperatures cause bacteria to grow faster. The best option is to leave the products in the refrigerator overnight.
Food can be frozen again, but it should not stay outside for too long, because the bacteria may have grown to harmful levels. They will become inactive, but when thawed can cause food poisoning.
