From 2017, retailers will be required to place real vinegar on a separate shelf in the store, rather than placing it between its imitations, as is the practice now.
This is stated in the new ordinance to the Wine and Spirits Act. From the end of this year, the traders will have to introduce a new organization in the arrangement of their products, said Krassimir Koev from the Agency for Vineyards and Wine.
The Consumer Protection Commission supported the new rule, as it would annul unfair commercial practices. Many customers are deceived because instead of real vinegar they buy its synthetic imitation, tempted by the low price.
Until then, the Commission advises you to read the product label carefully and not to buy just because it is cheaper.
Vinegar manufacturers, on the other hand, are adamant that imitations should not be offered by retailers and it is high time they were banned.
But large retail outlets are not ready to give up the profits that have low prices for synthetic products, and they are most often the subject of promotions.
According to a study by Active Consumers, many retail outlets in Bulgaria deliberately mislead customers into buying counterfeit vinegar by placing it between real vinegar.
Of all the supermarkets visited, Active Consumers found only one in which vinegar and its imitations are on a separate shelf.
The practice in most sites is for the entire stand to be marked with a large Vinegar sign and for both real vinegar and synthetic products to be in one place.
The Food Safety Agency defines synthetic vinegar as a sour spice that is unsuitable for canning winter food. In the worst case, its consumption can lead to severe stomach disorders.
