The nation that overeats the most at Christmas are Americans, according to a study by the American site Treated. An average of 3,291 calories are consumed by Americans from the Christmas table.

In the study of eating habits in different countries around Christmas, the second place in overeating remains the British, who lag behind the Americans by only 2 calories, says British health expert Dr. Wayne Osborne.

Third place in Christmas overeating is occupied by France, where 3217 calories are eaten around Christmas.

Bulgarians consume an average of 1,400 calories from the Christmas table, calculates the native nutrition expert Dr. Donka Baykova for the Telegraph newspaper.

That's almost half of the food the average American will eat this Christmas. However, Dr. Baykova's statistics do not include alcohol and bread taken for the holidays.

They may not be champions in Christmas eating, but Bulgarians definitely like to drink more alcohol around the big holidays.

While Americans drink mostly fruit or egg punch, in Bulgaria they traditionally raise toasts with brandy or wine. Whiskey, cognac and liqueur are also preferred alcohol for the Christmas table by our compatriots.

They eat healthiest around Christmas in Japan, where they consume less than 1,400 calories on Christmas Day. Among the healthiest Christmas menus is that of the Czechs as well as the Lithuanians.

The reason Americans overeat the most is their traditions. According to them, roasted turkey with stuffing, ham, vegetables, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, pudding, biscuits must be present at every Christmas table.

In the UK, they traditionally eat stuffed turkey for Christmas with a garnish of baked potatoes, blueberry sauce, steamed vegetables and Christmas pudding.
