Experiments with pigs, such as feeding them with blueberries and their equivalents, show that the level of cholesterol is reduced, which can be useful in conducting various studies for humans. The study was led by scientists in agricultural circles in Canada and published in a British food magazine.
The study was done with pigs because they have the most similar levels of blood pressure and heart to humans, and like us, they are prone to cardiovascular disease caused by different foods. Pigs also have similar cholesterol levels and problems to humans.
The researchers fed the pigs a diet that included 70% barley, oats and soy, supplemented with 1.2 or 4% blueberries. The most effective diet is 2% blueberries. It lowers cholesterol levels by up to 12% overall.
These 2% blueberries in the diet to which pigs are subjected are equal to two cups of blueberries for the human body. This is an exceptional discovery that is fully applicable to older people with similar problems and would lead to good results and better health.
Another experiment with pigs resulted in a different diet, which included only 20% barley, oats and soybeans and 1.5% blueberries. In this experiment, blueberries have no relation and effect on cholesterol levels. After the addition of additional salt and fructose, the cholesterol of the animals was reduced by 8% overall.
Experiments have shown that blueberries help lower cholesterol more effectively when animals are fed a diet that includes more plant species than when their diet is less so.
The antioxidant capacity of blueberries is one of the factors that can explain the effect observed in this experiment. Antioxidants are free radicals that protect us from cell oxidation, leading to heart disease, brain problems similar to Alzheimer's disease and tumors.
In studies with various foods for antioxidant content, blueberries are one of the leaders in the list of the highest content of polyphenols, which are specific flavonoids with antioxidant action.
