Winter rush (Flammulina velutipes) is an edible fungus of the Physalacriaceae family. It is widespread in Europe, Asia and North America. In our country this species is also known by the name Zimnenka.
In Russia it is known as Winter mushroom and Winter honeysuckle, in France it is called Collybie a pied veloute, and in Germany - Samtfussrubling. In English-speaking countries it is known as Velvet shank.
In Japan, a cultivated form of this species grows in greenhouses. It is called Enokitake and is quite different from the wild variety. As it grows without contact with the sun's rays, it is painted white. The other difference is that the tuft has a cylindrical shape due to the vessels in which it is grown.
The winter rush can be easily recognized. It has a yellowish or brown cap, which is initially bell-shaped, but over time becomes flat, with a slightly convex tip. It has a smooth surface and a diameter of up to ten centimeters.
The lamellae of the winter stump are orange or whitish. Some are free and others are fused with the stump. The stump of Flammulina velutipes is cylindrical in shape. It is thin and tough, characterized by a velvety surface.

There are other mushrooms that could mislead inexperienced mushroom pickers. These are Armillaria mellea, known as Common Pinscher, Kuehneromyces mutabilis (Prickly Prickly Pear) and Poisonous Punch (Hypholoma fasciculare). They deceive because of their development on wood.
