Three delicious breads, sesame seeds, two beef steaks, yellow cheese, lettuce, pickles, onions and all this covered with an appetizing sauce! Yes, this is the famous one Big Mac at McDonald's. He turned 50 last year. Adored by some, denied by others, since the 60s of the last century, he continues to generate passions. And there is no person who has not heard of him.
And who is the man who invented the most famous hamburger in the world? No, they are not the McDonald brothers, although in the early 1940s they were the reason for the burger's triumphant march around the world.
Big Mac was born in August 1967, and its creator was Jim Deligatti, one of many in America, who received the right to develop and develop the brand of famous restaurants through franchising. Deligaty was the manager of a restaurant in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and one summer day in the late 1960s, he decided for the first time to put two beef steaks between three sesame breads and garnish everything with sliced pickles.
His sandwich, which he started selling for 45 cents, was a real success. So big that a year later it was included in the official one McDonald's menu and began selling in all restaurants of the brand around the world.
In fact, it seems that the concept of double burger was invented by another fast food chain, Big Boy, back in 1936. But that doesn't matter today. Today, Deligaty's recipe is one of the most famous in the world and part of the American cultural heritage. He even opened a Big Mac restaurant-museum in North Huntingdon, near Pittsburgh. There you can see the largest statue of Big Mac in the world - 4 meters high and 3.50 wide.
Today, McDonald's restaurants sell more than 550 million Big Macs each year worldwide. His biggest fans are not only Americans but also Japanese. A symbol of pop culture, at the beginning of the 21st century, Big Mac is on the verge of gaining a bad reputation as a symbol of harmful food.
Despite the votes against him, however, his success remains unchanged in hundreds of countries. So much so that the British magazine The Economist created Big Mac index, an economic indicator that allows to measure the cost of living in different countries.
Because its price is very different in different latitudes - if it is available for $ 2.70 in the US, it costs $ 4 in the UK, $ 4.17 in the Eurozone, $ 1.45 in China and $ 7.61 in Iceland.
The Big Mac recipe has not changed since its inception and the products are the same almost everywhere in the world, with minor changes here and there. In France, for example, there is a Big Mac made of wholemeal bread, and in India, where a cow is a sacred animal, beef is replaced by chicken.
It's the American Gorske the world record for eating Big Mac. He ate his first in 1972. In fact, he liked them so much then that he ate nine at a time. And then he continued to eat two every day without stopping. According to him, earlier this year he ate his 30,000th Big Mac!
