The dandelion / Taraxacum officinale / is a perennial herbaceous plant with milk juice. It is found in meadows and grassy places, along streams throughout Bulgaria. Dandelion has been known as a medicinal herb since ancient times, it is called the balm of the sun's rays. This is no accident - dandelion helps with many diseases.

The dandelion has a strongly shortened stem and a well-developed root. Its leaves are pinnately incised, arranged in the shape of a rosette. From the middle of the rosette begins to grow a bare and hollow leafless stem, which is 5-30 cm high. It ends with a colorful, golden-yellow basket. The flowers are lingual and the seeds are spindle-shaped, equipped with a kite. All parts of the dandelion, together with the roots, are usable.

Composition of dandelion

The above-ground part of dandelion contains flavoxanthin, lutein, tin, arnidol, fapanediol, lactocerol, choline, asparagine, vitamins B1, C and D, as well as provitamin A. Dandelion milk juice contains the bitter substance taraxacin.

The roots of dandelion contain the triterpene compounds taraxasterol, taraxerol and pseudotaraskerol, as well as taraxacin, inulin, rubber. They contain fats, which are composed of glycerides of palmitic, linoleic, cerotinolic, oleic and other acids, inositol, mannitol and cholein.

Collection and storage of dandelion

As mentioned, all parts of the dandelion are used. The roots are collected in autumn and summer, and the leaves around the flowering - in spring and early summer. After collection, they are dried and stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.

In some countries, dandelion is purposefully grown as a culinary plant. Its leaves are used for a delicious spring salad, which is extremely useful for spring fatigue and beriberi. In addition to salad, dandelion is used to make healthy tea and some types of jam.

To make a salad from dandelion, let its leaves soak for 30 minutes in lukewarm water. The other option is to boil them until they change color. This removes their bitter substances. Then cut the leaves and season with olive oil and lemon to taste. Add chopped green onions, dill, parsley and a few olives.

It turns out that dandelion can also be a great spice for soup. Soak dandelion leaves in salted water, drain and chop finely. Add dill, lemon juice and parsley. Season your soups with this mixture.

Benefits of dandelion

The main action of the herb is aimed at improving liver function. In addition, it has a very good diuretic, choleretic and anthelmintic action, stimulates the appetite.

The overhead part of dandelion is used to treat the above conditions. The healing effect is due to the organic acids, bitter substances and glycosides contained in dandelion. Dandelion enhances the action of the pancreas and increases the secretion of insulin, reduces the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood.

Dandelion helps with liver disease, hemorrhoids, urinary tract diseases, stomach and intestinal disorders, acts as a diuretic. The herb is very useful in mild forms of diabetes. It is used for cough, constipation, spleen diseases, gout, intestinal inflammation, gas, anemia, blood sputum, to regulate blood pressure. Fresh leaves from dandelion are used to treat anemia, vitamin C deficiency, diabetes and atherosclerosis.

The leaves of dandelion relieve premenstrual syndrome, fluid retention due to cardiovascular disease, chronic rheumatism, arthritis. They can be used for acne, fever and metabolic imbalance.

Folk medicine with dandelion

To treat liver disease, boil 2 tbsp.leaves from dandelion in 500 ml of water for about 5 minutes. After straining the decoction, drink 100 g before meals.

In case of fluid retention and kidney problems, boil 1 tbsp. dried leaves with 1 tsp. boiling water and cover for 10 minutes. Drink one glass in the morning and evening.

In case of low tone, mix roasted dandelion roots with jam of your choice. Take 1 tbsp. before meals for 10 days.

In case of indigestion, pour 2 tbsp. finely chopped roots with 250 ml of water and leave for 8 hours. Strain the extract and drink it in small sips within a day.

Harm from dandelion

The early spring leaves of dandelion they can be made on a salad, but still should not be taken for too long, because digestive disorders can occur.
