This year, the vine-growers from Sandanski report bigger losses than usual and say that 2014 will be extremely weak for the domestic wine production.
Some of the producers in the region even said that their losses are in the order of 80%, which makes them give up farming in the future, News7 reported.
Native growers believe that bad weather conditions this year have led to a poor harvest. The rains, in addition to destroying much of the plantation, have led to many diseases in the vineyards.
Ognyan Kotev's family grows 30 decares of vineyards. Due to the unfavorable year, instead of the expected 24 tons of grapes, only 10 were harvested and of poor quality.
Lower quality grapes have been difficult to find buyers, so growers in the region do not expect big profits this year. Larger producers rely on last year's stocks to avoid bankruptcy.
The sugar content of the grapes has also fallen sharply this year and the addition of sugar has had to be officially authorized for winemakers.
