Currywurst is one of the main symbols of Berlin. There is even a whole museum dedicated to the legendary German sausage, and in place of its first construction there is a memorial plaque.
Chopped pork sausage, fried to a crispy crust, can be tasted throughout Germany.
When serving, sprinkle with curry powder, garnish with sauce and serve with french fries. Has your appetite increased? Then let's see how the ordinary sausage has become one of the symbols of Berlin, but we will also learn how to cook currytourst at home!
History of the origin of currywurst
Each national cuisine contains cult dishes, whose stories of origin are shrouded in legend and are not known for sure. Currywurst is no exception. According to one version, the dish was invented by Greta Hoyver on September 4, 1949. She sold sausages in her grocery store on the corner of Kaiser Friedrich and Kant streets in Berlin. And although there was a shortage of food in Germany in the post-war years, Greta still managed to get sausages.
And instead of Bavarian mustard, fried crispy onions and pickled cucumbers (classic ingredients in German cuisine at the time), she risks using curry and Worcester sauce, which she borrowed from nearby British soldiers. Later, ketchup was added to the English spices and a few other ingredients that Greta managed to get hold of.
The traditional German pork sausages steam, then fry until golden brown and pour over Chillup sauce. The price of currywurst was available, so the dish quickly became popular among soldiers and workers who rebuilt Belrin after the bombing. And after workers from Turkey began to come en masse to the German capital, a halal version of currywurst appeared - with beef sausages.
Such blood sausage can be easily bought in areas where a large number of Arabs and Turks live, such as Kreuzberg.
The sausages became so popular that Frau Hoever even opened her own restaurant, where she worked until 1974. The dish was also established in East Berlin - the Konnopke stand, which still exists today, is open under the subway overpass.
Currywurst capital is a contested position more than once by other parts of the country. The Ruhr and Hamburg regions claim to be proud of the birthplace of currywurst. And in Lower Saxony they even found the inventor of the sausage - the chef Ludwig Dinsladj, who three years earlier than Frau Hoyver began to serve the soldiers of the British army almost the same dish. However, there is orange jam in its sauce. Due to the lack of ketchup, many housewives then experimented with sauces, but it was Greta's recipe that was patented in 1951 not only in Germany but also in Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein.
The inimitable taste of currywurst
Currywurst cannot be compared to another popular fast food like hot dog. The dish is served on a plate and never rolled. The sausage is generously drizzled with sauce (a combination of Worcestershire sauce with classic tomato ketchup, red pepper powder, curry and other spices) and sprinkled with a spice of turmeric root on top. A special wooden or plastic fork is inserted into one of the pieces of sausage - original and very tasty!
Carivurst today
Germans and guests of the country eat up to eight hundred million spicy curry per year. There are many places where currywurst is served, but every Berliner has their favorite place. Some like this first stand in East Berlin - Konnopke, for some there is nothing better than Zur Bratpfanne - one of the first and still operating restaurants in West Berlin. If you like spicy, then visit Curry & Chili - a company restaurant where sausages are accompanied by ten sauces with increasing spiciness.
Are you a vegetarian? Then you're at Witty's, they cook meatless sausages. At Dom Curry and Duke you can try fish, ostrich and buffalo curry sausages.
The average price of the legendary sausage in Germany is only 2 to 4 euros.
