The dishwasher, which facilitates the work of hundreds of thousands of housewives around the world, was invented by the American Josephine Cochrane.
She was the daughter of the ship's engineer John Fitch, who was famous as a great inventor. He owned a shipping company and built ships according to his own designs.

Every day she disappeared from him in some part. In 1886, when one of the dessert plates broke, Josephine decided to get to work. After spending hours working on drawings, she made a prototype dishwasher.
It was a wooden barrel with a metal axis in the middle. A mesh basket hung on the shaft, in which plates were arranged in a circle. A steam engine turbine spun the basket with the plates and heated the washing water.
For this purpose, Josephine used ship engines. After several attempts, she managed to achieve her goal: the dishes came out of the machine intact and sparkling clean.
The inventor's friends made her patent her machine and show it at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
The spectacular success of the invention, the awards and the first orders changed Josephine's life. She set up a company, but was worried that only large restaurants and hotels would order the machine. She wanted to make it accessible to every housewife.
The failure in the household was due to a strange reason: the then housewives in the United States claimed to rest while washing dishes.
It never occurred to them that they should get rid of this work. It was not until the early 1950s that American women began using a dishwasher at home.
In Europe, the dishwasher also became popular in the fifties. Although the first serial electric dishwasher came on the market in 1926.
Chemicals for the machines were first introduced by Dayton University professor Dennis Waterby in 1984.
