Until recently considered expensive nuts - almonds, remained behind the hazelnuts, compared to the price per kilogram. Cedar nuts, with a price of BGN 68 per kilogram, remain with the highest prices among nuts.

The kilogram of hazelnuts has grown dramatically in recent months, Bulgaria Today reports. At the moment, one kilogram of roasted nuts is sold for BGN 47.

This increase made almonds visibly cheaper than hazelnuts. A kilo of almonds is traded for BGN 28.

According to experts, the reason for the more expensive hazelnuts in our markets is its reduced yield. Traders say it is now easier to find cedar nuts or chia instead of hazelnuts.

As late as last year, Turkey, the world's largest producer of crunchy nuts, warned that prices would rise because much of the plantations were frozen and destroyed.

Usually in our southern neighbor 800,000 tons of hazelnuts are harvested in one year. But in the last year, production has dropped to 520,000 tons.

Last year's cold in the country forced farmers there to raise the value of nuts since April. The increase was about 23 Turkish lira per kilogram wholesale, which is almost double its previous values.

According to forecasts, only at the end of this year there may be a gradual decrease in the prices of hazelnuts, after the harvest of the new harvest has been gathered.

For many confectioners, more expensive hazelnuts have affected their production. To keep the prices of their confectionery, some producers have replaced hazelnuts with peanuts, while others who want to follow recipes that require hazelnuts have made the final product more expensive.

Since last year, Bulgarians, in addition to more expensive hazelnuts, also buy more expensive walnuts, and the reason for the high prices is again the climatic conditions. The torrents over the country reduced the yield of nuts, due to which their prices per kilogram jumped to 4 euros.

For the cleaned walnuts, the prices per kilogram reached BGN 20, unlike in 2013, when they were around BGN 10.
