A new study on overweight, conducted at Ben-Gurion University, found that people on diets that included milk and dairy products generally lost more weight than those who consumed little or no dairy products.
Regardless of the diets, the researchers found that participants who consumed more calcium than dairy products, which equals 340 milliliters of milk or other dairy products and made up 580 milligrams of milk calcium, lost about 5 pounds in two years.
In comparison, those who consumed less calcium than dairy products, on average about 150 milligrams of milk calcium or less than half a glass of milk, lost an average of just over 3 kilograms.
In addition to studying the effects of calcium, the researchers also found that the level of vitamin D in the blood independently affects the success of weight loss. Thus, the level of vitamin D increases in those who lose more weight. Another study found that obese participants had low levels of vitamin D in their blood.
The study involved more than 300 overweight men and women aged 40 to 65 years. Researchers have also studied the effects of different types of diets, such as low-fat diets, the Mediterranean diet and the low-carb diet.
Dr. Denit Shahar, who conducted the study, confirmed what is already known that obese people have low levels of vitamin D in the blood, and new results have shown that the level rises in people who lose weight.
Vitamin D increases the accumulation of calcium in the blood and it is produced under the influence of sunlight. Vitamin D can also be accumulated in the body from whole milk, fatty fish and eggs.
