As of today, a bottle of vodka in Russia is sold for 185 rubles, which is equivalent to 2.34 euros. The old values of the drink of 220 rubles or 2.76 euros remain in the past.
This is the most drastic drop in vodka in Russia since 2009. Last year, the country's spirits producers raised its price several times, but were officially warned by President Vladimir Putin to curb the value of the drink.
The Russians were dissatisfied that in just one calendar year, vodka jumped to 199 rubles, and then to 220 rubles per bottle at retail. However, these prices remain in the past according to an ordinance that came into force today.
Earlier this year, Russia reported lower vodka production in 2014. The decline, according to Rosstat, was of the kind of 22% in just 12 months.
According to the producers, the last months of the year were the most difficult, when lower consumption was reported due to the high prices of vodka. 220 rubles for a bottle of vodka at retail forced a very large part of the Russians to buy alcohol illegally.
It was the illegal alcohol boom that forced state authorities to take action, persuading producers not to return the 2009 minimum drink price.
The industry has proposed changes to excise duties and value added tax at factory prices to reduce the basis on which traders place their mark-ups.
Inflation and the falling ruble exchange rate also affected vodka consumption in the country. The Russians openly shared that they were ready to completely give up the goods without which they could survive.
According to expert estimates, changes in vodka values were necessary because it would reduce production even more over the years.
Russians are one of the most drinking nations in the world, and according to a study conducted in 2013, they rank third in alcohol consumption, and their favorite drink is vodka.
