The 400-year-old mesquite, which grows in the desert about 2 kilometers from Jebel Dukhan, the highest point in Bahrain, is the Tree of Life or Sayarat al-Hayaah. It rises in the middle of the uninhabited Bahraini desert, at a great distance from other trees.
The name of the tree was not given by chance. The place where it grows has practically no water. The wasteland is uninhabited, and the tree has survived more than four centuries there. This makes it one of the world's mysteries. Folklore has created a number of legends about how and why the mesquite survives.
Religious people believe that thousands of years ago this was the place where the Garden of Eden was located, ie. the place where life originated. And the Tree of Life is exactly what God Himself has planted in the center of Eden. Mesquite bears fruit 12 times a year and gives eternal life. That is where its name comes from.
The Tree of Life enjoys thousands of visitors from all over the Middle East and around the world. They flock here to see the wonder of nature. Looking at the tree from a distance, it sits like a green drop dripping on the vast yellowish-brown desert.
Rubber is extracted from the type of mesquite. It is an evergreen and small tree. Its normal lifespan is just over 200 years. It is usually found in extremely dry areas, where it has the ability to naturally fertilize the soil.
The fruits of this mesquite are also used to make glue, candles and dyes.
Apart from being a natural phenomenon, the Tree of Life is useful and healing. Pods and seeds have long been used as a food source by locals. They are traditionally ground to a powder to make mesquite flour.
Subsequently, it is used as a flour, sweetener or as a main ingredient for the preparation of sweet drinks and fermented alcohol.
