As there are traditionally many desserts at the Christmas table, you can surprise your loved ones, and especially children with salty Christmas canes, which can be served on Christmas Eve.
You need eight teaspoons of water, three tablespoons of oil or olive oil, three teaspoons of flour, one teaspoon of salt, one and a half teaspoons of dry yeast, yellow cheese or Parmesan for sprinkling.
Christmas canes can be stored for several days in a tightly closed box. You can refresh them before serving by heating them in a hot oven.
Make a well in the flour, add salt and yeast, then pour water and oil into the well. Preheat the oven to one hundred and eighty degrees.
Mix the dough with a spoon or food processor, then place it on a floured table, lift it and hit it hard on the table. Roll out into a large rectangle.
Cut the rectangle into eight long strips. Cut the strips in half. Dip each strip into melted butter or oil. Arrange the strips in a tray.
Sprinkle the strips generously with grated yellow cheese or parmesan. Twist one end so that canes form. Bake until golden and serve warm.
If desired, you can sprinkle Christmas canes with poppy seeds, sesame seeds or coarse sea salt, which resembles frozen ice.
But if you prefer the sweet version of the sticks, you can sprinkle them with cinnamon, vanilla powdered sugar, ginger and coarse sugar.
