The term hamburger, as you might guess, originates from the city of Hamburg - the second largest in Germany. It was brought to the United States by immigrants.

In the beginning, our favorite burgers were minced meat in the form of meatballs, placed between two slices of bread. This creation gained popularity in America in 1900 because of Louis Lessing, a Danish immigrant and owner of a fast food restaurant.

There is much controversy about the founder of the first burgers or their prototype.

However, the Library of Congress in the United States officially announced Louis Lessing as the discoverer of the meat sandwich, with New York magazine adding that the dish did not initially have a name until several noisy Hamburg sailors began calling it a meat loaf years later. -Later, whence comes his name.

The first claims came from Charlie Nagrin, who claimed to have sold such meat sandwiches on the road back in 1885 at a fair in Seymour. However, this claim was not supported.

The next controversy came from Otto Kuz, who in 1891 prepared the meat with butter and garnished with a fried egg. There is a dispute from the same year, which came from Oscar Bilby, in which Governor Frank Keating expressed the opinion that he created the first real hamburger.

There are also controversial facts from Frank and Charles Menches, who claim to have sold beef sandwiches as early as 1885 at a fair in Hamburg, New York. There are similar claims from Fletcher Davis, who also claims to be the father of the burger.

People say that he opened a restaurant in Athens in the distant 1880s, where he served a hamburger with fried beef, onions, mustard and added pickles as a side dish.

In 1921, during the First World War and widespread anti-German sentiment, an alternative name for the burger was created - Salisbury Steak. After the war, however, the sale of a large number of small square burgers began, and in 1995 they began to be found in frozen versions and in vending machines (such as coffee machines, desserts and others).

In 1940, the fast food chain McDonald's was opened, which in 1953 acquired a license to make and sell burgers.
